Filipinos woke up to a wonderful surprise as Hidilyn Diaz bagged the silver medal for the 53-kg division of weightlifting in Rio Olympics this morning (Manila time).

Diaz ends the 20-year medal drought that had plagued the country since Mansueto “Onyok” Velascofinished second in Atlanta in 1996, but this is just one of the reasons why her win is historic.

Diaz is the first Filipina to win a gold medal. She is also the first Olympic medalist from Mindanao.

In a video posted on her facebook page, Diaz credited God for her win.

“Thank you, Lord,” she said. “Kakaiba ka, Lord God. Kakaiba ka.”

The three-time Olympian scored a total of 200, just one point above the bronze medalist from South Korea Yoon Jin-hee.

In addition to her success in the Rio Olympics, Hidilyn Diaz will also be receiving P5 Million.

A law that was signed by the former president Benigno Aquino III states that who ever will win a silver medal at the ongoing 2016 Rio Olympics will be given P5 Million in cash incentives!

Republic Act (RA) 10699, otherwise known as the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act will provide the athletes who were able to win silver medals in individual events in the Summer Olympics, 5 Million Pesos.

Meanwhile, athletes who will win a gold medal for the Philippines at the Summer Olympics will then receive P10 Million.
